October 24-October 30, 2023-Week 25-San Miguelito

 Hey hey!!

Another week in Panama down! Next week I hit six months in the mission, and I won't be able to believe it. I have loved being a missionary and being in Panama. It has been a blessing to share with everyone how Christ wants to have a covenant relationship with everyone of us. Hermana Christensen and I have been working really hard to be exactly obedient to bring miracles into this area. We have the goal, with the help of God, to help 7 people be baptized in the one living and true church! We currently have 8 people with a baptismal date, all but two that we put last week. We are searching for more and more people who need Christ in their life, and who doesn't? We have had miracles fall from the sky, and it is a testament that God is God of miracles --- big and small.

Hermana Christensen has been pretty sick with chills, fever, bad stomach problems, sleeping all the time, and just overall exhaustion. We thought she might have dengue fever, so we got her tested this morning in a clinic. But, the results came back negative, so she must have come down with the worst case of a fever ever. So please pray for her!

Panama has also been going through a tough time right now. There have been protests over this one mine in Penonome. The government wants to keep it open to make money, but the people want it closed because it pollutes the country a lot. So, the people have rallied together with protests, which have caused lots of streets to close, and transportation to be abysmally worse. We haven't left our neighborhood this week because we don't know if there would be a sure way to get back. Also, the protests has given gangs more chances to vandalize, rob, and have shoot outs since the police are preoccupied. So overall, not the best situation. I feel safe, so I am not really stressed. And the work goes on with video calls when we need to be in the house earlier at night!

I think the best moment of the week is when we took our friend, Magela, to visit her dad, Andres. Magela was going to be baptized this Sunday, but the date got postponed with the protests and all that. Anyways, she is rock solid and amazing, and her kids were members before her. But, she did not get baptized when they did because she wasn't married. She kept going to church, but with time, they stopped going, except for the oldest son, who referred her to us a month ago. This just shows God's time is perfect because now she is married, and her decision to be baptized is bringing her kids back into activity. Anyways, now her dad is interested and she came to a lesson with us to him. At the end we wanted to conclude with a prayer, and she took the lead and taught him how to do it and was like "ok repeat after me" and told him "yeah if you want to be baptized, you have to take these classes from the missionaries and read your scriptures and pray". I love to see the change the gospel has in people's lives and to see people converted to the Lord!

Our neighbor has some chickens that we prayed for and they improved in their health... and when we asked how they were he said "oh bastante bien"

October 19-October 23, 2023-Week 24-San Miguelito

 Title: las dos hermanas christensen

Hey all!! I left the land of chicheme for the ghetto of zona San Miguelito in the area of San Vicente! The area is big as well and has so much work to be done. The hardest part is going to be transportation, as always in panama. And today lots of protests began so we can't travel very well since some roads are shut down. We were able to go to the supermarket though, so we have food!

But this area is a lot different and I definitely miss my ward family that I had in Guadalupe! But I have had a lot of meetings to plan out this transfer as I am now an Hermana Lider, which means I will do lots of exchanges and ministering to the hermanas in my zone and en zona panama! The ward here is smaller and we have a free bus that takes us to our church -- a diablo blanco, since normally the school buses we ride for transport are called diablo rojos, but this one is painted white. It kills me we are literally riding to church in a "white devil", but so be it!

This area is so pretty and gorgeous and hermana christensen and I get along really well. Her spanish is super good and she has only been here four transfers! There are lots of hills and mountains and everything is lush and green. The only setback is the whole water situation in our house...like there is never water in the street, therefore no water in our house, and we cannot fill up our reserve tanks unless we wake up at 3am and monitor it. So, we haven't been sleeping very much. Our house owners have been over a lot and take good care of us, but they were here last night and when we got home, they told us there was possibly a bat in the house. HAHA! Turns out there was, and Hermana Christensen found it at 11:30pm and woke me up with her scream. We were able to get it out, so go check out our lovely screaming videos on my google photos.

But really I love being a missionary and there are so many "right time, right place" miracles! God is just in the details of our lives and is guiding our paths -- a neighbor helping us with our water and letting us shower in her house, running into a menos activo (less active) we were trying to find, visiting with members right when they needed a visit, saying the things we needed to say. I also got the opportunity to talk in church and it was so funny because the bishop calls me and says, "yeah hermana christensen if you can give your testimony for like 8 or 10 minutes that would be great". It went well!

The funniest stuff that happens is everyday, without fail, everyone being so confused that we are both named Hermana Christensen. Literally I just introduce ourselves as "las hermanas christensen's" because not only are we two gringas living in the ghetto, we have the same name.

First night with the other Hermana Christensen

October 10-October 18, 2023-Week 23-San Miguelito (Wednesday P-day Because of Transfers)

Title: I'm going to the ghetto!!!

Well, after four months and three transfers here in Guadalupe, I am leaving to go to zona de San Miguelito, area de San Vicente. I am going to be an hermana lider (sister leader), which means I will do exchanges, attend leadership conferences, and help the other hermanas in my zone and another zone. It should be fun! The funniest part is my new companion is also Hermana Christensen! So we are going to be talking to people and be saying "somos las hermanas de la iglesia de jesuscristo y somos las hermanas christensen's" (we are the sisters from the Church of Jesus Christ and we are the sisters Christensens)!! It should be fun. She has one transfer less than me. Apparently my zone is pretty ghetto. Everyone leaves San Miguelito to move somewhere else because it is the slums and with lots of hills and shanty towns. It will be a completely different experience than Guadalupe, with lots of rolling hills and neighborhoods and diablo rojo bus rides.

This last week and a half has been so good! It was a great way to end my last bit of time here. One of the awesome miracles that happened was the baptism of our friend, Yosmar Castillo. His brother and his sister are converts, and he was literally prepared from the foundation of the world. One of those souls who the veil is already very thin and he was looking for the truth. We taught him in three weeks and he really wanted to be baptized before I left, so he was baptized on Sunday. The part that was so special and so cool was that Isaac, our other recent convert, came to the baptism and bore his testimony and said "si no tuviera por hermana christensen, yo no estaria aqui! Ella me visto por una mes y yo no estaba astitendo la iglesia y yo decidi a ir. Me sentia que yo estaba lejos de Dios. Se que le iglesia de jesucristo de los santos de los ultimas dios es la iglesia verdad". (If I didn't have sister Christensen, I wouldn't be here! She visited me for a month and I wasn't attending church and I decided to go. I felt like I was far from God. I know that the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day saints of God is the true church.) I felt so blessed to have stayed for another transfer here in Guadalupe to see these miracles and to make life long friends!

A whole lot has happened in this past week and a half, so I am not going to bore you with the details. But, we had a multi-zone conference with almost all of the mission. A 70 came to the mission and it was a special conference, and I got to see Hermana Hatch again (basically best day ever!). President Forsberg said an awesome quote that I loved "your difficulties are gold mines" and to seek and expect miracles when you are passing through something difficult, like when all your lessons fall through or you miss home, etc. I felt like this this last transfer. I did not understand why I trained this transfer because it was really hard! I was really stressed and I felt insufficient and unexperienced, but God was able to turn this difficulty into a great joy. I was able to be here for the baptism of two of my great friends and come to love Hermana Lunt.

I am excited for this upcoming change, and it will surely be different. I am leaving a piece of my heart here, no matter how cliche that sounds, but I am excited for what the future brings.
